What a veneer actually is
A veneer is a thin, custom shell, usually porcelain, bonded to the front of a tooth. It changes colour, shape, length and alignment in a way whitening alone cannot. Think of it as resurfacing rather than rebuilding.
Great for some problems, overkill for others
Veneers excel at closing small gaps, masking deep stains and reshaping chipped or uneven teeth. If your only concern is colour, whitening is cheaper and more conservative. A good clinician will steer you to the least invasive option that achieves your goal.
The process, start to finish
Expect a consult and digital smile preview, light preparation of the tooth surface, temporary veneers, then bonding of the final set, typically across two to three visits. Well-made porcelain veneers last ten to fifteen years with normal care.
Caring for them
Brush, floss and attend checkups as normal. Avoid using your teeth as tools and wear a night guard if you grind. Treated well, veneers stay bright because porcelain resists staining better than natural enamel.
